HeadliceConventional treatment for head lice may cause more harm than the pests themselves. Some commercial products contain chemicals that can have adverse effects on children’s health. Neem has been safely used for protection from insects for more than 5000 years in India. It is not a poison but is effective as a treatment for head-lice because it interferes with the life cycle of insects, inhibits their ability to feed and prevents the eggs from hatching.

Regularly washing the hair with Neem Herbal Shampoo is a safe natural way to control and prevent parasites including head lice. Neem oil however is stronger. To deal with bad infestations add 10 - 50 drops (according to age) of Neem oil to 100ml of almond oil massage into the hair and leave for several hours, or overnight before washing off with Neem Herbal Shampoo. Repeat for several days if necessary. Click picture to enlarge.

According to Helena, Maeve attends playschool and earlier this year she was infested with head lice. I added neem oil to her ordinary shampoo and washed her hair. Once it was dry I added Neem to Sweet Almond oil and rubbed this into her scalp. We left this in overnight and did this for three days and also used a finetooth comb. After three days there were no lice left and no more eggs had hatched. All Maeves bedclothes were washed and the application was repeated ten days later. Maeve was conpletely clear of lice after three days and her hair is lovely and healthy.
