Pineapple problems in Hawaii

The organic pineapple crop in Hawaii was once in big trouble with heart rot, and needed an organic solution. It didn't take them long to realize that neem is a very good thing. They inter croped neem with all the regular crops using neem as a wind break. The results were outstanding and the farm became a show case for neem.

The sugar cane industry is on the way out in Hawaii, which leaves a lot of dormant fields, so they have started planting 50,000 neem trees instead. (extract from Neem Update, Vol. IV No.2, of Neem Foundation).

For the Protection of Stored Crops

Neem leaves, oil or extracts act as a repellent against several insects such as weevils, flour beetles, bean-seed beetles and potato moths.

Experiments have shown that neem is also effective against fruit flies. Med fly, one of the most damaging horticulture pests, can be controlled by spraying neem solution under fruit trees. Neem has an advantage over the currently used pesticides. Conventional pesticides kill fruit flies as well as their internal parasites, However neem products, leave the biological-control organisms unaffected; they only kill fruit flies.

Neem replaces Chemicals in Dubai

A recent development is the use of Neem in the United Arab Emirates, where beautiful flowers adorn manicured parks and roadsides. Initiatives of the UAE President, HH Shaikh Zayed, have replaced sandstorms with pleasant weather, at least from September to April. Besides Date Palms, Neem and Kikar, the country has artificially cultivated several varieties of beautiful leafy trees, including fruit trees. Many fruits, like mango, guava and papaya are grown in the island wildlife sanctuary of sri Bani. The Abu Dhabi municipality produces 1.5 million tree saplings, 20 million flowers and 30,000 plants each year. The country produces 11 million tons of vegetables each year.

Environment obviously is a key concern, and HH shaikh Zayed has also given due emphasis to the protection of wildlife as well as marine life. There is concern about global warming and the destruction of the ozone layer. and therefore there is a strict control on ozone-depleting chemicals. By 2005, it would be illigal to deal in them. There is a check on leaded fuel, 57 insecticides are banned, and the manufacture of chemical insecticides is not allowed in the country. In fact, pesticides made from the neem tree are now gradually replacing chemicals.

Neem and Farmers In India and Pakistan most farmers mix a "handful" of neem leaves in their stored grains to protect them from pest.
